journal entry 3

Topic-Surfing was first invented by the Polynesian cultures in the late 1700's. Surfing back then was little more then riding waves on planks of wood wearing loin cloths. Today surfers can opt for artificial waves or natural waves; ride boards made from wood, fiberglass, epoxy or even carbon fiber! Surfers no longer have to "guess" when a swell is coming; advancements in whether tracking devices has allowed surfers predict where the best surf will be. The point is surfing has made leaps and bounds over what it once was due to the advancements in technology.

Question-How has Technology helped the sport of surfing evolve?

Rationale- As a surfer, this subject naturally interests me. As corny as it sounds, researching this topic is like finding out my surfing roots. I just surf waves, i don't know how things came to be or what has shaped surfing history into what it is today. Its almost like im only seeing the tip of the ice burg with surfing. I know there is much more to the history of surfing then meets the eye, and hopefully with this paper I can achieve a better understanding of my favorite hobby.

Journal entry #2

We have all seen them on the road; faceless daredevils on too wheels passing car or weaving through traffic at speeds that will churn anybody's stomach. I'm talking about motorcyclist, and im not refering to the rough and tough Harley Davidson cruzers, but the fast-living crotch rocket riders. I have always been intrigued by these type of people since I was little. I remember looking out my aunts passenger side window when a man on a sport bike drove next to us. He looked over and saw my wide eyes and knew I was facinated. He gave me a wave and took off like a bat out of hell. From then on I have always been envious of people on sport bikes.

Bikers are highly accessable to me (or to anyone for that matter.) With the rising gas prices more and more people are switching from cars to motorcycles. Some motorcycles can get over 70 MPG! Not only are sport bikes gas efficent, but they are serious performers. They are called crotch rockets for a reason, the absolutly hual. Sport bikes rivals the performance of 6 figure cars for the price of a economy car. You would probably wonder why something so cheep and thrilling isent more popular, but agian there is a reason for that as well. These machines are absolutly dangerious. They offer no protection to the rider in case of an accident and have poor breaking abillity; for this reason, most people automaticly rule motorcycles out of the question for daily transportation.

This group of people meets the requirements of a sub-culture because they have their own Rituals, Artifacts, Identity and Language that is not shared with anyone else. Their bikes are their artifacts; their gear give them identity; they have their own slang; and have their own rituals.

let me introduce myself...

Hey guys, my name is Sony Kham; yeah, just like the company. Anyway, I'm 19 years old, born and raised in Florida. I work for Hollister as a floor model, which means I stand at fount of the store and wear their stuff. Its not actually modeling, but I was one of the few floor models who were chosen for a photoshoot to be put on the bags and posters nationwide.

I am kind of an adrenaline junkie, and almost everything I do is dumb and reckless; but a good adrenaline rush is the only thing that keeps me going. To feed my addiction, I go surfing. You can bet that me and my friends will be at the beach before, after and sometimes even during a hurricane. Im also really into Lacrosse because its such a fast paced game, and I plan to play for UCF after I get my A.A. degree. Another thing I really enjoy is driving. I have an 08 Lancer Evolution and I gotta say I drive way too fast for my own good, but it puts a smile on my face every single day no matter what kind of mood im in.

Im majoring in excersice science, and I am currently going through the steps neccessary to become a personal trainer. I'm a health nut, but I was not always like that. I used to be fairly skinny and even though I was a varsity athlete, I had bad health habits. I would party, never get enough sleep and eat junk food more then id like to admit. I really had no idea what I wanted to do for a living, but that all changed when my friend talked me into going the gym one day. It was a rocky start at first but I stuck to it and after a while I was absolutely hooked. I just owe so much to fitness that I decided to devote my life to helping other people look better, become stronger, feel better, and ultimately be happier. I want to be a personal trainer.

I have read and agree to the terms of the blog.
